Privacy Matters

My husband and I have decided to delete our Facebook accounts, but I will retain my blog. There will be changes in some of my posts - I will use nicknames instead of full names, to confound search engines. I will edit older posts as I have time to reflect this change in my policy.

We just want to make sure our children stay safe and if - in thirty or forty years - either of them run for office, embarrassing baby pictures and stories won't show up connected to them. :-) (This is totally not one of the reasons...at least, not a big reason.)

We also have been thinking a lot about some of the things said during General Conference about the amount of time social networking can take up. More food for thought there.

AND... We honestly don't use Facebook much anymore. My husband is literally never on and when I am... No one ever has anything to say except "ha, ha!" or "LOL" or other shallow comments. If you're really my friend, call me or email me! I think Facebook gives the illusion that we have a lot of friends or people out there who care about us when in reality we're becoming a nation of voyeurs. There. I said it.

I also have a highly insensitive and formerly abusive step-father who - to my knowledge - doesn't know about my blog or anything about my kids. I'd like to keep it that way.

Anyway, if you too would like to rid yourself of online social baggage, here's the link that will help you do it: http://www.facebook.com/help/search/?q=how+do+i+delete+my+account
